When we decided to build our house, one of our first requirements was that we should have a proper pantry, a "walk in pantry". That it should be located on a northern wall was obvious, where it would be cooler.
When we ordered the kitchen units from Kvänum, we had left the corner free. 120cm x 120cm was the dimension and it has proved to be just the right size……We have space for all we need.
We found a mirror panelled door in our old summer cottage. This we repaired and painted and is now the door to our pantry. There is an old key hole lock in the door and it suits perfectly.
We have filled two of the walls with shelving, containing everything you need. We have space for soft drink and beer crates on the floor, household electrical appliances, which otherwise takes up a lot of space in the cupboards.. On the shelves we have plenty of flour, sugar, preserves and other important items. For Christmas we had plenty of space for all the tins containing Christmas bakes.
We placed a window in the pantry, just because it looked good from the exterior. Naturally this is not optimal thinking for a pantry, as some items need to be preserved cool and in darkness. That's the way it is with us sometimes, the aesthetic thinking taking precedence.
In the pantry we have a vent allowing cool air to enter. This is working well and it is a lot cooler in the pantry than in the rest of the kitchen. We also planned that no underfloor heating was located in this floor space.
I will be making jams and juices in the summer and in the autumn I will be preparing pickled cucumber and beetroot. Naturally the finished products will be housed in the pantry!
I am looking forward to rows of bottles and pots with hand written labels…..an everyday luxury to dream about!
